Search results still show two HSK worlds: the classic 6-level HSK 2.0 marketing charts, and the new HSK (HSK 3.0) materials released for 2025–2026. Here is a practical comparison so you do not prepare for the wrong target.

Snapshot comparison

Vocabulary gap between classic HSK 2.0 and new HSK outline
The biggest shock for most learners: lower levels are heavier than the old 150/300 charts.
Dimension Classic HSK 2.0 (common learner lore) New HSK / 3.0 (Nov 2025 syllabus + Dec 2025 samples)
Levels 1–6 (often + separate HSKK speaking) 1–6 detailed; 7–9 advanced band together
Vocab marketing 150 / 300 / 600 / 1,200 / 2,500 / 5,000 ≈295 / 491 / 989 / 1,979 / 3,568 / 5,360 / ~10,958 cumulative
Design Word lists + paper skills Tasks + topics + vocab + characters + grammar
Writing From mid levels Writing/书写 appears from level 2 sample structure
Speaking Separate HSKK for many candidates Speaking samples from HSK 3; advanced outline includes oral expression
Timeline Long-running standard Syllabus Nov 2025; samples Dec 2025; implement July 2026

Vocabulary: why old flashcard decks feel “light”

A classic “HSK 1 = 150 words” deck covers far less than the new L1 band (~295). Jumping to HSK 4 under the new cumulative count (~1,979) is closer to “old HSK 5 lore” in raw size.

Action: If your goal is the new exam path, rebuild decks around scenes (food, travel, school) and verify counts against HSK vocabulary 2026.

Skills: four skills, not “listen + read only”

Classic self-study culture over-optimized reading/listening apps. New materials emphasize:

  • Listening + reading on paper
  • Writing earlier in the ladder (from L2 samples)
  • Speaking tasks with timed answers

That is good news if you already practice conversation: output is no longer “extra credit.”

Structure complexity

New L1 is short (~40 items, ~40 minutes). Higher levels grow to ~110–125 minutes with denser writing. See exam structure.

What you should do this month

  1. Confirm which paper your test center will offer for your date.
  2. Take an unofficial placement quiz.
  3. Read the hub: New HSK 2026 guide.
  4. Start scene practice: HSK 1 introduce yourself.
  5. Add speaking drills: HSK speaking test.

FAQ short answers

Will employers still understand “HSK 4”?
Yes for a long time — but the difficulty behind the label may shift. Always state the year/version when you can.

Should I throw away old materials?
No. Keep useful graded readers and audio. Update targets and word counts, and add writing + speaking.
