“Learn Chinese fast” usually means one of two things: fast early progress (greetings, survival conversation) or fast long-term fluency (HSK 4+). Those are different games. This guide optimizes for fast usable speaking in the first 30–90 days without the burnout that kills most streaks.

Baseline first: free HSK level test

What “fast” actually looks like

Timeframe Realistic outcome (30–45 min/day)
7 days Greetings, numbers, self-intro, tones awareness
30 days Simple daily exchanges, 200–400 words active
90 days Short unscripted answers, travel Chinese, HSK 2–3 path

If someone promises fluent business Mandarin in two weeks, ignore them.

The 4 levers that actually accelerate learning

1. Speak from day one

Passive apps feel productive and transfer poorly. Force output daily:

  • 10 spoken sentences every day
  • 1-minute self-intro, then expand
  • Shadow 2 minutes of native audio

2. Fix tones early (not perfectly, but deliberately)

You don’t need perfection before speaking. You do need:

  • Tone pair awareness (tone pair trainer)
  • Immediate correction on meaning-changing errors

3. High-frequency vocabulary only

Learn words you’ll say this week:

  • People, food, places, time, verbs (go/want/can/like)
  • Build sentences, not isolated flashcards only

4. One stack, not fifteen apps

A simple daily stack beats a perfect ecosystem you abandon:

  1. Dictionary (Pleco)
  2. SRS (Anki or similar)
  3. Listening input
  4. Speaking output with feedback

30-day fast-start schedule

Days 1–7: Foundations

  • Pinyin + tones (15 min)
  • 15 survival phrases (10 min)
  • Speak them out loud (10 min)

Days 8–21: Sentence machine

  • 10 new words/day inside sentences
  • 5 minutes shadowing
  • 5 minutes free speaking on one topic (food, work, travel)

Days 22–30: Pressure practice

  • 90-second answers without script
  • Record + compare to native audio
  • Take a placement check: HSK level test

What to stop doing

  • Collecting 20 apps and finishing none
  • Studying only characters before you can speak
  • Silent “studying” with zero output
  • Chasing perfect grammar before basic fluency

A 20-minute daily template
